GOLF

Everyone knows I like to play golf, and do a couple times a week and sometimes more Last Friday I went and played in the "Villages" for the first time in over a year. I played a nice new course that borders CR466A, an area that used to be a two lane road that ran from Wildwood to Fruitland Park, now it is a four lane divided highway with golf courses and houses the whole way. No more cows, crops or local "homes" sure seemed odd standing on the tee and seeing houses in all directions where once there was nothing but cows. Oh well, it was a very nice course, I rode to the course with my friend Jim who lives in the Villages, I guess it was about 5 miles from his house to the course, it would have been closer for me to drive my car than ride with him, but not as much fun. Following is a picture of me standing beside Jim's golf cart, pretty nice................

24 July 2008

Good morning all, I am sitting in my living room listening to the heavy equipment in my back yard. The windows shake, pictures fall off the walls. My friends, The Villages are getting ready to build houses behind our home, if you watch TV you have seen commericals for "America's friendliest home town" well maybe they are friendly but now there are about 70,000 of them with the numbers growing daily. Any of you that have been to our home, the pasture behind us is the the latest part of the Villages, I guess the only thing "good" thing is that I heard that some of the lots will be going for $1,000,000.00, may be the time to sell???? Enough about the Villages, it really is a great place to live, we use their services all the time.

In prior posts I talked about the 4th of July, and birthday parties, and family cookouts but there is another big story from the summer that I need to comment on and that is the fact that Mother is selling her home.

I'm glad that she has made this decision and is doing it willingly. I know it was a hard decision for her, the house was purchased in 1947 and has lived there since, except for a short time that we lived across the street. We all understand the reasons for selling and support it. I spent the first eighteen years of my life in that house and have many memories , most involve balls, as that was what we did in our younger days. There was basketball in the dining room, baseball in the front yard, and throwing balls on the roof for hours on end. At some point in my life the barn was overrun with white rabbits, don't remember how many there were but in one of the old stalls you could only see a sea of white.....I believe that we ate a large percentage of them. Its hard to believe that the house in those days was heated by a kerosene heater in the living room and a burner in the kitchen stove. On cold nights we would sit almost on the stove to keep warm, and there was no heat upstairs in our bedroom, only that ,that came up through a small register in the floor. I am not complaining about this only using it to show the difference between the 50's and now. The furnace came long after I was gone.

Mom is moving to an apartment across the street from Stew and Merry, soon to be Kerrie and Kevin. I know this helps mother, knowing Kerrie will be close if she needs anything. We are hoping that she will come to Florida for an extended stay this year. She has always she couldn't leave the house, but that excuse is now gone. Remember Mom, Bingo as many nights as you want in Florida....

Rogers Family Cook Out

Yes, we went to the parade, had a big birthday party, but we did have a cook out on the Rogers side of the family. As we normally do the cook out was at the "pond", at Stew's camp. This is such a great place to get together. The kids, big and small went fishing and for the first time in a long time, no fish were caught. Rumor has it that Stew didn't put any fish in the pond this year, he said money was tight......It was a great time for one and all, enjoy the pictures.

4th of July Birthday Party

As I mentioned in my last blog, the 4th was a busy day, after the parade we all went back to the farm to have a big birthday party for Gram Howe, it was her 85th, and that called for a family get together complete with bar-b-que chicken, baked beans, rolls, salads, birthday cup cakes and a lot of fun. I cooked the chicken the day before, and took grief from Andrew for not cooking it fresh but it was either cook early or not go to the parade, the parade won. Everyone liked the chicken, Britt said it was the best chicken ever...ah grandchildren. There was a good turn out for the party, all were present except Matt and his family(haying) and Hannah and her family(twins). The party lasted into the evening with many extended family and friends stopping by to wish her well. The party is something we do every five years, so the next one will be for her 90th, that one should really be a big one. Following this is a slide show of the party and the fun we all had getting ready. Many more happy days.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEW

Today is Stew's birthday, and if my math is correct this is number 57, so another year and a lot has happened for Stew. Lets take a look at the past year, another trip to Montana for the great white hunter. An elk, deer, and antelope and then he was home. About this time Stew and Merry bought a home in Florida and now I have to look forward to six months of Stew each year. Now it looks like he is going to be homeless in Vermont, selling their home to Kerri and family. I think it will get chilly at the "camp" before heading south. Have fun and have a Happy Birthday....

4th of July 2008

The 4th of July is always a big day when we are in Vermont, a busy day, as the family goes to Randolph for the big parade. The Howe/Mitchell families gather at the home of Abbie Howe Mitchell on Highland Ave. Abbie has a big house with a wonderful large yard with plenty of big maple trees for shade. Of course the parade comes down Highland Ave so we all have a front row seat. I didn't count but I'm sure there were over 50 family members at the gathering. The kids sit on the curb and scramble for the candy that is thrown from the floats and the fire trucks. This year there was new "stuff" thrown, yogurt, and goats milk. Both refreshing on a hot summers day. The "older" folks visit and get caught up on family that they may not have seen for some time, there is always somebody that hasn't attended for a long time which adds to the fun of the day. After the parade, it back to the farm for lunch and more......but that is an another blog to follow shortly. Enjoy the parade as we did.
